Bareback Bronc Riding
Hang on with one hand and get in time with a gyrating,
plunging, kicking bucking horse for 8 seconds and you have
completed the fundamentals in Bareback Bronc Riding. This
contest is one of the fastest in the rodeo and without
question, a dangerous event. To stay on the horse, a bareback
rider uses a rigging made of leather that is constructed to
meet PRCA safety specifications. The rigging resembles the
handle of a suitcase, is placed atop the horse’s withers, and
secured with a cinch. The rules are definitely written in favor
of the horse. The cowboy is required to leave the chutes with
both heels touching the horse on the neck, which throws the
rider off balance. If he fails to do so, he will be disqualified.
Each of the judges scores the rider from 1 to 25 and the horse
from 1 to 25. Any ride marking above 50 should be
considered above average.
